Image Sanitizer

Image Sanitizer is a small Mac app that removes hidden information from your photos before you share them. Drop in photos or whole folders to see what each one reveals, such as location, device and dates, then remove it with one click. The picture stays perfect, nothing leaves your Mac, and you pay once.

What it does

Every photo you share carries more than the picture: where it was taken, when, and with which device. Image Sanitizer shows you what a photo reveals, then removes it. What’s left is just the picture.

Adding a photo only reads it. Each one shows how many hidden fields it carries, and hovering tells you what kind. Nothing changes until you press Sanitize.

After writing, every file is read again. If any of the information you chose to remove is still there, the file is reported as failed. A green checkmark means the file is actually clean.

How to use it

  1. Add your photos. Drag photos or whole folders onto the window or the Dock icon, click + in the toolbar, or use Open With in the Finder.
  2. See what they reveal. Each row shows how many metadata fields the photo carries. Hover over it to see what kind.
  3. Choose what goes. Pick the categories to remove from the toolbar or in Settings (⌘,). Everything is selected by default; turn off anything you’d rather keep, such as your copyright notice.
  4. Sanitize. Press Sanitize (⌘R). Files are cleaned in place and checked again once they’re written.

Good to know: files are changed in place. If you want to keep the original information, make a copy first.

What it removes

  • Location: GPS coordinates, altitude, direction, city and country
  • Camera & Device: make, model, lens, serial numbers, software and exposure settings
  • Dates: date taken, time zone, and the file’s own creation and modification dates
  • Author & Copyright: artist, creator and copyright notices
  • Descriptions & Keywords: titles, captions, keywords and face regions
  • Other Embedded Data: edit history and anything it doesn’t recognize, so new kinds of metadata don’t slip through

Image Sanitizer removes metadata. It doesn’t change what’s visible in the picture itself.

What it keeps

JPEG, PNG and TIFF keep exactly the same pixels. HEIC, HEIF and GIF are saved again at high quality and look the same. Orientation, color profile, HDR and animation are always kept.

Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Image Sanitizer (the “App”), developed by Igor Putina (“I”, “me”), handles your information.

The Short Version

Image Sanitizer does not collect, store, transmit, sell or share any of your data. Everything the App does happens on your Mac. There is no tracking whatsoever.

Information I Collect

None. The App does not collect any personal or non-personal information. In particular, the App has:

  • no user accounts or sign-in;
  • no analytics, telemetry or usage tracking;
  • no advertising or advertising identifiers;
  • no third-party software development kits (SDKs) or crash-reporting services;
  • no cookies, fingerprinting or other tracking technologies.

How Your Images Are Handled

  • The images you add are read and processed only on your device. They are never uploaded, copied to a server or shared with anyone.
  • The App cannot connect to the internet. It runs inside the macOS App Sandbox without network access, and it can only access the files you explicitly give it by dropping, opening or choosing them.
  • Adding an image only reads its metadata. Files are changed only when you press Sanitize, and only in the ways you select.

Your Settings

Your choices of which metadata to remove are saved in the App’s preferences on your Mac so they are remembered next time. They never leave your device, and they are removed if you delete the App and its preferences.

Apple

If you downloaded the App from the Mac App Store, Apple processes information related to your purchase and download under its own privacy policy, which I do not control. If you have chosen to share analytics with app developers in your Mac’s settings, Apple may provide me with anonymous crash reports and aggregated usage statistics. These do not identify you, and I cannot link them to you.

Children’s Privacy

Because the App does not collect any information, it does not collect information from children of any age.

Your Rights

Data protection laws such as the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) give you rights over your personal data, including the rights to access, correct and delete it. Because the App does not collect or process any personal data, I hold no data about you to access, correct or delete. You are welcome to contact me with any privacy question.

Changes to This Policy

If this Privacy Policy changes, the updated version will be included with the App and will show the date of the latest update. Any change will continue to reflect the App’s core principle: your images and data stay on your device.

License Agreement

This End User License Agreement (the “Agreement”) is a legal agreement between you and Igor Putina (the “Developer”) for the Image Sanitizer application, including any updates, documentation and related materials (the “App”). By downloading, installing or using the App, you agree to be bound by this Agreement. If you do not agree, do not download, install or use the App.

1. License

Subject to your compliance with this Agreement, the Developer grants you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable and revocable license to install and use the App on Apple-branded computers that you own or control. If you obtained the App from the Mac App Store, your use is also subject to the Usage Rules set out in the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions.

2. Restrictions

You may not, and may not allow anyone else to:

  • copy, modify, translate or create derivative works of the App, except as expressly permitted by this Agreement or by applicable law;
  • reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble or attempt to derive the source code of the App, except to the extent that applicable law expressly permits this despite this limitation;
  • rent, lease, lend, sell, sublicense, redistribute or otherwise transfer the App to any third party;
  • remove, alter or obscure any copyright, trademark or other proprietary notices in the App;
  • use the App for any unlawful purpose or in violation of any applicable law or regulation.

3. Ownership

The App is licensed, not sold. The Developer retains all right, title and interest in and to the App, including all intellectual property rights. All rights not expressly granted to you in this Agreement are reserved by the Developer.

4. Your Files and Your Responsibility

The App modifies image files in place. Sanitizing a file permanently overwrites it, and removed metadata cannot be recovered through the App. You are solely responsible for:

  • keeping backup copies of any files you wish to preserve before using the App;
  • choosing which information to remove;
  • verifying that the resulting files meet your needs before sharing, publishing or relying on them.

Image formats, and the metadata they can contain, vary widely and change over time. The Developer does not guarantee that the App will detect or remove all metadata or hidden information from every file, or that files will remain unaltered in every respect other than their metadata.

5. Privacy

The App processes your files entirely on your device and does not collect any personal data. Please see the Privacy Policy for details.

6. Updates and Support

The Developer may, at their sole discretion, provide updates to the App. The Developer is under no obligation to provide updates, maintenance or support of any kind. Any updates provided are governed by this Agreement unless they come with separate terms.

7. Disclaimer of Warranties

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, THE APP IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE”, WITH ALL FAULTS AND WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND. THE DEVELOPER EXPRESSLY DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES AND CONDITIONS, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING ANY WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS OF MERCHANTABILITY, SATISFACTORY QUALITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY, QUIET ENJOYMENT AND NON-INFRINGEMENT OF THIRD-PARTY RIGHTS.

WITHOUT LIMITING THE FOREGOING, THE DEVELOPER DOES NOT WARRANT THAT THE APP WILL MEET YOUR REQUIREMENTS, OPERATE WITHOUT INTERRUPTION OR ERROR, COMPLETELY REMOVE ANY OR ALL METADATA, OR THAT FILES PROCESSED BY THE APP WILL BE FREE FROM LOSS, DAMAGE OR CORRUPTION. NO ORAL OR WRITTEN INFORMATION OR ADVICE GIVEN BY THE DEVELOPER CREATES ANY WARRANTY.

8. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT WILL THE DEVELOPER BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF DATA, FILES, PROFITS, REVENUE, BUSINESS OR GOODWILL, OR FOR ANY UNINTENDED DISCLOSURE OF INFORMATION, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE APP, HOWEVER CAUSED AND UNDER ANY THEORY OF LIABILITY, EVEN IF THE DEVELOPER HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

IN NO EVENT WILL THE DEVELOPER’S TOTAL LIABILITY TO YOU FOR ALL DAMAGES EXCEED THE AMOUNT YOU PAID FOR THE APP, IF ANY. SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF CERTAIN WARRANTIES OR DAMAGES, SO SOME OF THE ABOVE MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU. IN THAT CASE, THE DEVELOPER’S LIABILITY IS LIMITED TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW.

9. Indemnification

To the extent permitted by applicable law, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Developer from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses and expenses, including reasonable legal fees, arising out of or in connection with your use of the App or your breach of this Agreement.

10. Termination

This Agreement is effective until terminated. Your rights under this Agreement terminate automatically and without notice if you fail to comply with any of its terms. Upon termination, you must stop using the App and delete all copies of it. Sections 3, 4 and 7 to 14 survive termination.

You may not use or export the App except as authorized by the laws of the jurisdiction in which you obtained it and any other applicable laws. You represent and warrant that you are not located in a country subject to an embargo or designated as supporting terrorism by the United States or any other applicable government, and that you are not listed on any list of prohibited or restricted parties.

12. Mac App Store Terms

If you obtained the App from the Mac App Store, the following terms also apply:

  • Acknowledgement. This Agreement is between you and the Developer only, not Apple Inc. (“Apple”). The Developer, not Apple, is solely responsible for the App and its content.
  • Scope of license. The license granted to you is limited to use of the App on Apple-branded products that you own or control, as permitted by the Usage Rules in the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions.
  • Maintenance and support. Apple has no obligation to provide any maintenance or support services for the App.
  • Warranty. If the App fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price, if any, for the App. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Apple has no other warranty obligation with respect to the App.
  • Product claims. The Developer, not Apple, is responsible for addressing any claims by you or any third party relating to the App or your possession or use of it, including product liability claims, claims that the App fails to conform to any applicable legal or regulatory requirement, and claims arising under consumer protection, privacy or similar legislation.
  • Intellectual property claims. In the event of any third-party claim that the App or your possession and use of it infringes that third party’s intellectual property rights, the Developer, not Apple, is solely responsible for the investigation, defense, settlement and discharge of that claim.
  • Third-party beneficiary. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of this Agreement and, upon your acceptance of it, Apple will have the right to enforce this Agreement against you as a third-party beneficiary.

13. Governing Law

This Agreement is governed by the laws of the Republic of Moldova, without regard to its conflict of laws principles. The courts of Chișinău, Republic of Moldova, have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising out of or relating to this Agreement, except where the mandatory consumer protection laws of your country of residence provide otherwise.

14. General

  • Entire agreement. This Agreement, together with the Privacy Policy, is the entire agreement between you and the Developer regarding the App.
  • Severability. If any provision of this Agreement is found unenforceable, it will be enforced to the maximum extent permissible, and the remaining provisions will remain in full force and effect.
  • No waiver. The Developer’s failure to enforce any right or provision of this Agreement is not a waiver of that right or provision.
  • Changes. The Developer may update this Agreement from time to time. The updated version will be included with the App and will indicate the date of the latest update. Your continued use of the App after an update means you accept the updated Agreement.
